The New Kindle 4
kindle 4 readerDon't be fooled by the low price tag - what you get with the new entry level Kindle 4 is a fully functional reader with the same great Pearl e-Ink technology display that's featured on both the Kindle Touch and the Kindle Keyboard.

  • Weighs less than 6 ounces.
  • 6.5" x 4.5 " x 0.34"
  • Pearl technology 6" e-ink display. Reads like paper.
  • Download books in 60 seconds using built in Wi-Fi.
  • Over 1,000,000 Kindle books to choose from.
  • 800,000 books at $9.99 or less.
  • 1.8 million out-of-copyright books available free.
  • Borrow Kindle books from your local library.

If you're looking for a reader that will be used mainly for, well, reading books, then the Kindle 4 might well be the ideal choice for you. It has no keyboard or touch screen - but that means that it can be kept small, compact and light.

kindle 4 buttonIf you need to enter data, a virtual keyboard can be called up by pressing one of the buttons near the base of the reader. You then input data using the central 5-way toggle switch.

Kindle 4 virtual keyboardThis may not be quite as convenient as using a keyboard or a touch screen - but, if you think about it, you may not be doing this very often anyway. If you're using it mainly as a reader, the only time that you'll want to input data will probably be when you're looking for a new book on the Amazon store.

The other 99% of the time, you'll be more than happy using the page forward and page back buttons which are very well positioned and make it easy, together with the Kindle 4's small size and weight, to operate your reader with one hand.

It's worth pointing out that the Kindle 4 doesn't have any audio capability - so you won't be able to use the "read-to-me" function, listen to audio books or play mp3 files.

It also has 2GB of memory rather than the 4GB of the Kindle Keyboard and the Kindle Touch. However, that's still enough for 1,400 books - which should be plenty, even for the most voracious reader.

All things considered, the Kindle 4 is stunning value for money and, if you're looking for a low cost reader that's light and portable and will be used simply for reading, the new entry level Kindle 4 could very well be the perfect solution for you.

Kindle Touch reader buttonThe Kindle touch is the latest addition to Amazon's ebook reader stable.

The screen is divided into three separate zones. Touch the right hand two thirds of the screen and you will go to the next page. Touch the left hand margin and you go back to the previous page. Touch the very top of the screen and you will be taken to the menu screen. It makes one handed operation easy.

The Kindle Keyboard, previously known as the Kindle 3, has got pretty much all the same features as the Kindle Touch - but with the addition of a physical QWERTY keyboard instead of a touch screen.

It does not, for the moment at least, have the X-ray feature.

Obviously, with the inclusion of a physical keyboard, it's a bit larger and heavier than either the Kindle 4 or the Kindle Touch - but it's still a very portable device.

If you like to make a lot of notes, maybe to leave for your fellow bibliophiles on Facebook for example, or if you just prefer a physical keyboard to a touch screen, then the Kindle Keyboard may be the right choice for you.

The Kindle Fire Tablet Computer
Kindle fire tablet computerFirst things first, the Kindle Fire is a tablet computer rather than an ebook reader. It has a color LCD touch screen (
and a very nice one at that) rather than an e-ink display.

  • 18 million movies, songs, TV shows, books and magazines.
  • Thousand of popular games and apps.
  • Super fast web browsing with Amazon's new Silk browser.
  • Stunning color touchscreen with extra wide viewing angle.
  • Free cloud storage for all your Amazon content.
  • Fast and powerful dual core processor.
  • Instant streaming of over 10,000 TV shows and movies for Amazon Prime subscribers.

  • Intuitive touch screen interface.
  • Weighs just 14.6 ounces - easy to use with one hand.
  • Dimensions 7.5" x 4.7" x 0.45".
  • 8 hours of reading or 7.5 hours of video between battery charges.

No Monthly Fee For Connectivity
The Kindle connects to Amazon’s e-book store using 3G wireless technology. There’s no need for an internet connection or WiFi hotspot and there are no download connection fees or monthly subscription charges.

Alternatively, if you choose the Wi-Fi only option, you can connect free at ant AT & T hotspot.

Choose From A Huge Range Of Titles
It takes less than a minute to download an e-book to your Kindle and you can currently choose from 950,000 titles on Amazon. The list is growing daily. The Kindle device itself can store up to 3,500 books.

In addition to e-books, newspaper, magazine and even blog subscriptions are available. Apart from Kindle books, the device supports various other file formats including .TXT and MP3. PDF files are now supported.

The kindle also has limited internet browsing capabilities.

Value For Money
Now that the Kindle has been reduced to as little as $79 it's great value for money and very affordable. Don't forget that Kindle books are cheaper since they don’t use any print consumables, so the cost of your Kindle may be recovered fairly quickly for heavy readers. You can also find a good selection of free Kindle books - right on Amazon's website, and there's a lot more starting at just $0.01. You could recover the purchase price of your Kindle pretty quick with prices like that.

Over the piece, the Kindle may prove to be the ideal product for Amazon. Fast, free and easy downloads coupled with Amazon’s huge selection of available titles will encourage even greater loyalty to the already trusted Amazon brand. Customers will return to Amazon for further book purchases and, as the Kindle goes mainstream, economies of scale should be achievable.

All things considered, it looks like good business for Amazon and the Kindle could very well change the way we all look at books in the not too distant future.

The Kindle reader  is the ideal choice for anyone who loves books. However, if you aren't completely sure about whether or not to buy then why not check out the free Kindle apps that Amazon has made available. You can read Kindle books for free on a large number of other devices.

You can even get Kindle games these days!
